Located at 255 Thimble Islands Road, Branford, the Lewis Cottage was built in 1882 for Isaac Lewis, the founder of Meriden Britannia, which would eventually become part of International Silver. Drawing architecturally upon elements of Second Empire, Gothic Revival and the Stick Style, the house was designed by architect Henry Martin Jones. It is still occupied to this day by members of the Lewis family, with original interior furnishings and a lovely oceanside setting.
The Stoney Creek Museum at 84 Thimble Island Road is open from 1pm-4pm. The Stony Creek Museum celebrates the rich history of a Connecticut shoreline village, which grew out of the pink granite underlying its soil. The quarries in the area provided stone for the foundation of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the facades of many Manhattan Skyscrapers. Immigrants arriving throughout the world to work the quarries formed a diverse and eclectic community.
